DIY Air-Dry Clay Christmas Gift Tags

These DIY air dry clay Christmas gift tags are so easy to make, but just add that extra appreciation to any gift! And you know what else, I think these are probably cheaper than store bought gift tags, I couldn’t actually believe how expensive some gift tags were being sold for. So lets get into it!

Clay Christmas Gift Tags Tutorials

Let’s get started

What you’ll need

  • Air-dry clay (any brand)
  • Rolling pin (or a glass bottle)
  • Small knife or clay tool
  • Toothpick or skewer
  • Acrylic paint (white, plus small amounts of colour)
  • Paintbrush
  • String
  • Gloss Varnish

Step 1: Roll out the clay

For starting these clay Christmas gift tags you will need to start by rolling out your air-dry clay on baking paper. You want it about 3–5 mm thick — not too thin, or it may crack

Step 2: Cut your shapes

Using a small knife or clay tool, cut out your shapes. I went with a simple goose shape, star, candy canes and Xmas trees.

Step 3: Make the hole

Before the clay dries, use a toothpick or skewer to make a hole near the top of each tag. This is where the string will go later.
Make sure the hole isn’t too close to the edge so it doesn’t snap once dry.

Step 4: Let them dry

Leave the clay tags to air dry completely. This usually takes 24–48 hours, depending on thickness. Flip them over halfway through so they dry evenly.

Step 5: Paint your designs

Once dry, paint your tags. I painted all the tags white, both back and front, I did two coats as i found it was a little sheer.
Once the base coat is completely dry, paint your designs on.

Let these fully dry and varnish them, I used a gloss varnish but its completely up to you if you want to varnish them or now, I just really like the gloss look.

Let the varnish dry fully.

Step 6: String and style

Thread some twine or string through the hole and tie it onto your wrapped gift.
I wrote the name of the recipient on the back, These tags look so cute!

And That’s All!

They also double as keepsakes, your recipient can hang them on the tree or reuse them next year. I would love to hear about your designs! Let me know, and Merry Christmas!
