DIY Doily Collar: Upcycling Thrifted Fashion for Under $3

Upcycling is a fantastic way to make old or thrifted items into something new and more trendy and suited to your own style. Upcycling is a budget friendly way to bring life into older items. Today I’ll show you how to make a doily into a collar. Both items are thrifted from my local charity shop for under $3.

What you need:

  • An old doily
  • A cardigan or a jumper with a stretchable neckline
  • Scissors Pins and needles (or a sewing machine)
  • Thread that matches the doily color

Instructions:

  1. Measure and cut the doily: Measure the circumference of the cardigan’s neckline and cut the doily to the desired length, cut it in half needed, leaving a 1-inch margin where this will be folded under the cardigan.
  2. Prepare the doily: Gently stretch the doily to remove any wrinkles and flatten it out.
  3. Pin the doily to the cardigan: Place the doily around the neckline of the cardigan, aligning the edges, and pin it in place using straight pins. You can angle off the collar like I have by tucking the doily under more. You can cut excess doily that’s underneath at the end.
  4. Sew the doily in place: Using a needle and thread, hand-sew the doily to the cardigan, starting from one end and working your way down, do the same for the other side if you have two collar pieces like me. You can also use a sewing machine if you prefer.

Upcycling a doily into a collar for a cardigan is a creative and eco-friendly way to give new life to an old or vintage item. With just a few simple steps, you can transform a plain cardigan into a stylish and unique piece that showcases your personal taste and flair. This DIY project is perfect for those who love to repurpose and reuse, and it makes for a great way to add a touch of vintage charm to your wardrobe. So, get creative, get crafty, and give your cardigan a fresh new look with an upcycled doily collar!
