Beginner Sewing Supplies

1. A Basic Sewing Machine

The most important tool is, of course, your sewing machine. For beginners, you don’t need a fancy model with dozens of stitch options. A simple machine with a straight stitch, zigzag, and buttonhole function is perfect.

Tips:

  • Make sure it comes with a manual and support for beginners
  • Test it on scrap fabric before starting your first project, in fact test on fabric before starting any project.

Here is the link to a great basic sewing machine for beginners, this machine has multiple beginner friendly stitches and is so easy to use, this machine is also beginner friendly cost wise too.

2. Fabric Scissors

Sharp fabric scissors are a must. Using regular scissors can fray fabric and make cutting uneven.

Tip: Keep these scissors only for fabric — don’t use them for paper or packaging. If you invest in a pair seriously only keep them for fabric.

I have a few pairs but these are my fave. Tailor scissors

3. Pins or Clips

You’ll need something to hold fabric layers together while sewing.

Options:

  • Sewing pins
  • Clips, I started using these this year and o m g, i wish I started sooner

4. Measuring Tools

Accuracy and precision is essential in sewing. Even beginners need simple measuring tools:

  • Tape measure for body measurements
  • Ruler or quilting ruler for straight edges

5. Seam Ripper

Mistakes happen. A seam ripper lets you undo stitches so easily. Its probably one of my most used tools.

Tip: Keep it close while sewing; it’s one of the most-used tools in your kit.

6. Thread and Bobbins

You’ll need good-quality thread in colors you use most, not sure what color to invest in, black and white, beige and brown is my go to. Always wind extra bobbins in matching thread before starting a project.

Tip: Cheap thread may break easily or fray, making sewing frustrating.

7. Needles

Even with a sewing machine, having hand-sewing needles is helpful. Some things are surprisingly easier to hand sew than machine sew.

Tip: Keep a small variety of sizes for different fabrics.

8. Iron and Ironing Surface

Pressing seams is essential. A small craft iron and ironing board or pressing mat will make your projects look finished.

Tip: Press as you go for professional-looking results.

9. Optional But Useful (Don’t Buy Everything!)

Some tools are nice-to-have, but not necessary for beginners:
