DIY Polymer Clay Worry Stones (Calming Mental Health Craft)

If you are looking for a simple craft that is fun to make and helpful for stress, these DIY worry stones are the perfect project, easily customizable to fit any needs.

These little clay stones are called worry stones because they can help calm anxiety, and ease stress. To use a worry stone, simply rub your thumb up and down on the grove made on the stone.

I made these using polymer clay and baked them in the air fryer (yes, really!), and they turned out like super cute little characters that you can take everywhere. I made mine for my close friends, as a lovely gift to help during hard times.

They truly are a perfect thoughtful gift, they go well in care kits, and can even be donated to mental health services, or places that support people struggling with mental health.

What Are Worry Stones?

Worry stones are small objects with a grove that you rub with your thumb to help soothe anxious thoughts.

This repetitive motion can:

  • Help regulate emotions
  • Provide a calming experience
  • Offer a simple grounding technique during stress

Adding cute designs makes them feel more personal and special.

How to Make DIY Worry Stones

Let’s begin…

Materials You’ll Need

  • Polymer clay (multiple colours)
  • Clay tools or toothpicks
  • A smooth surface to work on
  • Air fryer (or oven)
  • Baking paper
  • Top coat (nail polish, mod podge, sealer )

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Shape Your Stone

Roll your polymer clay into a ball, then gently flatten it into a thick disc.

Use your thumb to press a small indent in the centre, this is what makes it a “worry stone” and gives your thumb a natural place to rest.

2. Add Your Design

Now for the fun part!

Create cute designs like:

  • Smiley faces
  • Fruit (pineapple, tomato, etc.)
  • Ladybugs
  • Little characters with hats or accessories

Use tiny pieces of clay to add eyes, cheeks, and details.

Tip: Keep details slightly raised so they stay visible after baking. Also classic worry stones are super smooth, but I find a worry stone with little bumps (the faces) even more grounding

3. Smooth the Edges

Gently smooth out fingerprints or cracks to give your stone a polished finish.

4. Bake in the Air Fryer

Place your stones on baking paper and bake in your air fryer.

  • Temperature: around 130°C
  • Time: 5-10 minutes (depending on thickness)

Keep a close eye on them, polymer clay can burn if overheated.

Let them cool completely before handling.

5. Varnish

I used Nail polish top coat to get a shiny finish

6. Create the Backing Cards if You are Gifting Them

Cut small squares of cardstock and write:

“Worry Stone” or a message of your choice

Add hearts or simple doodles

Since I am gifting mine, I secured my worry stone in place with hot glue. This way it stays secure but can easily be removed from the backing card.

Tips for Best Results

  • Don’t make them too thin
  • Wash your hands between colours to avoid smudging
  • Use a toothpick for fine details
  • Test your air fryer with one piece first

Ways to Share the Impact

This craft becomes even more meaningful when it’s shared.

You could:

  • Add them to self-care kits
  • Gift them to friends or family going through a tough time
  • Include them in mental health care packages
  • Donate them to schools, support groups, or community organisations

A small handmade item like this can make someone’s day.

Why This Craft Matters

In stressful moments, having something small to hold and focus on can help ground you.

These worry stones are perfect for teaching yourself grounding techniques and are easy to carry with you for day to day anxiety, stresses and challenges. And being handmade, just makes them so much better!
