DIY Popcorn Kernel Ladybugs for Plant Pots

A quick & cute way to decorate plain pots

I recently turned ordinary popcorn kernals into tiny ladybugs and glued them onto a plain black plant pot using a hot glue gun. The result is super cute and it is such an easy way to turn boring plant pots into cuteness.

These little bugs are made by colouring unpopped popcorn kernels with acrylic paint markers. Once dry, they look surprisingly realistic and stick really well with hot glue.

Here’s exactly how I made them.

What You’ll Need

  • Unpopped popcorn kernels
  • Acrylic paint markers (red and black)
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • Plain plant pots (plastic or terracotta both work)
  • Optional: clear sealant spray or Mod Podge for extra durability

That’s it — very low-cost and beginner-friendly.

Step 1: Paint the Ladybug Bodies

Take a small handful of popcorn kernels. I made 10

Using the red acrylic paint marker, colour the rounded part of each kernel. Apply two coats if needed so the red is bright and solid. Leave the pointed tip unpainted for now — that will become the head.

Step 2: Add the Black Details

Once the red is dry, use the black paint marker to:

  • Colour the pointed tip of the kernel to create the head
  • Add 3–5 small black spots on the red body

Step 3: Let Them Dry Fully

Give the painted kernels time to dry so the paint doesn’t smudge when you handle them.

Step 4: Glue Them onto the Pot with Hot Glue

Decide on your layout. I scattered mine randomly down the side of a black plastic pot so they look like they’re crawling.

Heat up your hot glue gun. Put a small dab of hot glue on the flat underside of each kernel and press it firmly onto the pot. Hold for a few seconds until the glue sets.

I used about 7–8 ladybugs on one pot, which felt like the right amount.

Step 5: Optional Sealing

If the pot will be outdoors or get watered often, Use a sealant such as mod poddge to help prevent moisture. Carefully paint on the sealant.

Final Thoughts

A handful of popcorn kernels, two paint markers, a hot glue gun, and you’ve transformed a plain plant pot into something cute and creative.

Happy crafting!
