DIY Mistakes That Waste Money (And How to Avoid Them)
The craft store is my favourite place to spend money, not only spend money, waste money too. It’s so easy to over buy supplies you don’t even know how to use. DIY is meant to save money really. So let’s talk about common DIY mistakes that waste money.

Easy Crafts You Can Do Without Expensive Supplies
25+ Fun & Easy Crafts to Do When Bored

1. Buying Supplies Before You Have a Plan
This is the #1 money drain, you buy things on impulse.
You see pretty yarn, cute fabric, new molds and you buy it, all with no actual project or reason in mind.
Fix:
Always ask yourself:
What exactly am I making? Do I already own something that would work?
If you can’t confidently answer the question, you don’t need it.
2. Choosing the Cheapest Materials Every Time
Cheap isn’t always a smart decision, because cheap is usually low quality. Felting wool doesn’t firm up, paint is think fabric frays… etc. Once you discover it’s cheap quality you re buy supplies or quit the project entirely.
Fix:
Buy mid-range quality for tools and base materials. Research and read reviews about the brands. Having decent quality tools and materials makes a huge different in the finished project and saves money in the long run.
3. Starting Too Many Projects at Once
Half-finished projects = wasted money.
Fix:
Finish one project before starting another. If you struggle to finish projects, try smaller projects.
4. Buying Every Tool “Just in Case”
You do not need every tool available for your project. 14 crochet hooks is excessive, a huge yarn stash is excessive and will probably never get used
Fix:
Buy only what is needed to complete your project
5. Falling for Craft Trends You Don’t Actually Like
Don’t do the trend just because everyone is and it’s popular at the moment, make sure you actually love it. Resin art was so trendy a few years back, I never did it because I don’t like resin, my mother however bought all the supplies only to make half assed earrings when she doesn’t even have her ears pierced.
Fix:
Ask: Would I still want to make this if no one saw it online?
If the answer is no, skip it.
6. Not Practicing on Scrap First
Cutting straight into expensive fabric.
Using your best wool on your first felting attempt.
We all do it and it hurts to mess up.
Fix:
Use scrap materials for testing stitches and colours and litterally everything. Mistakes happen and it hurts less when they are on scrap materials
7. Ignoring Storage
When supplies aren’t stored properly they ruin, paint dries, fabrics fade and you will have to re buy all the materials again.
Fix:
Clear bins. Labels. Small drawers.
You don’t need a Pinterest craft room, just simple sensible storage that is easy to navigate.

Final Thoughts…
DIY only saves money if:
✔ You finish projects
✔ You use what you buy
✔ You craft intentionally
Otherwise, it becomes an expensive hobby.
