DIY Tic Tac Toe Set in a Portable Jute Bag

This craft is fun to make and fun to use. his DIY tic tac toe set is the perfect project. I originally planned to use real stones, but couldn’t find the right ones, so I made my own using clay.

To make it even better, this DIY tic tac toe set game board is painted directly onto a jute drawstring bag, so it doubles as storage and a travel-friendly game, great for kids during long car trips.

Simple, aesthetic, and super functional.

Why You’ll Love This Project

This is a fully portable game set, the pieces can be made from stones or clay so pretty much unbreakable, easy to travel with and kids love it!

  • All-in-one design (board + storage)
  • Easy to take anywhere
  • Perfect handmade gift idea
  • Great for kids and adults

Materials You’ll Need

  • Flat Stones or Air-dry clay if you cant find any
  • Black paint pen or fine brush
  • Clear sealer (optional)
  • Small jute drawstring bag
  • White paint

Step 1: Make Your Clay “Stones”

Find some stones, different shapes is totally fine but there should be a flat surface to paint on the knots and crosses. If you cant find stones, make them with clay!

Take small pieces of clay, roll them into balls, then gently flatten them slightly.

Aim for a natural, imperfect shapes with littles dents even, this gives off a totally natural stone like look.

Let them dry completely.

Step 2: Paint the Stones

Paint a white circle for the background on all the stones/clay pieces.

Step 3: Add X’s and O’s

Use a black paint pen or fine brush or even a vivid to draw:

  • X’s on half
  • O’s on the other half

Keep it slightly imperfect for a rustic feel.

(Optional: Seal with a clear coat to protect the paint. I used nail polish top coat)

Step 4: Turn the Bag Into the Game Board

Lay your jute drawstring bag flat.

Using white fabric paint, draw a tic tac toe grid directly onto the front

Step 5: Store & Play

Once everything is dry:

  • Pop your clay pieces inside the bag
  • Pull the drawstrings closed

When you’re ready to play, just open the bag and use the front as your game board.

Tips & Variations

  • Use darker fabric paint for contrast
  • Add names or initials to personalise it
  • Try different color themes for the pieces
  • Paint fruits instead of the ‘X’ and ‘O’s
  • Make mini versions for party favors

Perfect For

  • Travel games
  • Kids’ quiet activities
  • Handmade gifts
  • Market stall products
  • Coffee table decor

Final Thoughts

This is a super fun DIY game for kids to make and use. Its so simple to make a requires very minimum materials, some of which can be found in the garden if you choose to use stones instead of clay.
