What You’ll Need

Step 1: Make the 3D Clay Shapes

Ghost: Make a cone shaped blob. Add arms, use the clay tools are water to secure into place.

Pumpkin: Make a sphere from the clay, add groves like a pumpkin would have with the clay tools. Add a step by rolling a tube with clay and cutting it to size. Secure the stem with water.

Dip a finger in water and smooth any rough or cracked edges.

Step 2: Add the Hardware

Add the hardware to the top of your clay, I do this when the clay is not dry, i think if its dry it will crumble. Add glue to the hold to make it extra secure.

Step 3: Let Them Dry

Lay your pieces on parchment paper or a flat surface and let them dry for 24 to 48 hours.

Step 4: Paint

  • Ghost: Leave the clay white or add a coat of white paint. Paint two small black eyes.
  • Pumpkin: Paint it orange, the stem green, and add a face if you like.

Let the first coat dry, then add a second coat if needed.

Step 5: Seal

Brush on a thin coat of clear sealer to protect your paint and help the clay hold up to daily use, especially if it will live in a pocket or bag. Let it dry completely, and add a second coat for extra durability. Add extra sealant around where the hardware sits.

Tips

  • Air dry clay can crack. If you see small cracks, smooth them with a little water while the clay is still damp.
  • Air dry clay isn’t waterproof, so keep your keychains away from water, even once sealed.
  • Get creative: bats, black cats, candy corn, and spooky moons all work with the same method.
