Beginner Crochet Mistakes ( And How to Fix Them)
Crochet looks so easy when you watch someone else do it, just repeating yourself over and over again, it must be hard to make a mistake right?… wrong, mistakes happen all the time in crochet and this how you fix them.
If you’re just starting out, here are the most common beginner crochet mistakes and exactly how to fix them.

Using the Wrong Yarn and Hook Size
One of the biggest beginner mistakes is ignoring yarn labels.
Why it causes problems:
- Stitches look uneven
How to fix it:
- Check the yarn label for recommended hook size
- Start with medium-weight (worsted) yarn
- Use the suggested hook
Crocheting Too Tightly
Tight stitches are extremely common for beginners, if you saw my beginner crochet projects, you would laugh!
Signs you’re crocheting too tight:
- Hard to insert the hook
- Hands get tired quickly and sore
- Project curls or feels stiff
How to fix it:
- Relax your grip
- Size up one hook size
- Practice slow, relaxed stitches

Losing or Adding Stitches
Uneven edges usually mean stitches are being missed or added. When I made my first granny square, once side was way longer than the other and ?I thought how could that happen, I counted every stitch…
Why it happens:
- Skipping the first or last stitch
- Miscounting rows
How to fix it:
- Count stitches at the end of each row
- Use stitch markers… I use curtain hooks. lol
- Pay attention to turning chains
Not Understanding Turning Chains
Turning chains confuse many beginners. You only need to learn it once and you have it.
Common issues:
- Gaps at the edges
- Uneven sides
How to fix it:
- Learn what the turning chain counts as in your pattern
- Stay consistent throughout the project
- Follow pattern instructions closely
Mixing Up US and UK Crochet Terms
US and UK crochet terms are different, even though they use the same stitch names.
Why it matters:
- Stitches come out the wrong size
- Projects don’t match the pattern
How to fix it:
- Always check which terminology the pattern uses
- Keep a US vs UK stitch conversion chart handy. Here is one I made Crochet Conversion Chart UK to US | Free PDF Download
Skipping Gauge Swatches
Many beginners skip gauge swatches. Honestly make a tiny granny square before starting, especially if you are crocheting baby clothes. You might just need to adjust yarn and hook size.
Problems it causes:
- Projects turn out too big or too small
- Wasted time and yarn
How to fix it:
- Make a small test square before starting
- Adjust hook size if needed
Giving Up Too Soon
Crochet has a learning curve, and mistakes are part of the process. All of my projects in the beginning were absolutely awful!
How to fix it:
- Practice with simple projects
- Undo stitches without guilt
- Remember that improvement comes with time
Final Thoughts
Every crochet mistake is a learning opportunity. The more you practice, the easier it becomes to spot and fix issues quickly, soon you will be crocheting without looking… just like the pros.
