Some days you just want to sew but don’t want to do a large project that takes all day or even multiple days. So I have compiled a list of sewing projects that can be finished in one afternoon! No more half finished sewing projects – I’m very guilty of this. Let’s get on with the list…

1. Envelope Cushion Cover
If you can sew straight seams, you can make this.
Here is my tutorial: How to make an Envelope Pillowcase in under 10 Minutes!
An envelope cushion cover is beginner-friendly and doesn’t require zippers or buttons. I have made envelope pillow cases from old wool blankets and they turned out great.

2. Simple Tote Bag
A lined tote bag is a fabulous sewing project that can be made in one afternoon.

You can add pockets, add embroidery work and more, but a bag with no zips or buttons is pretty quick to whip up.

3. Scrunchies (Yes, They’re Still Cute)
You can make so many scrunchies in one afternoon. This is a great sewing project because scrunchies are so versatile meaning you can make them from cotton, satin, linen and basically any scrap fabric.

4. Zipper Pouch
Don’t let the zipper scare you. They can be awful to sew, I fully admit that, but on a smaller scale, such as a zipper pouch, it’s easier and great practice too.
Use it as a makeup bag, or a pencil case. Once you can make one you can make one hundred of them.

Tip: Use clips instead of pins near the zipper to avoid breaking needles.

5. Elastic Waist Skirt
If you want a one afternoon sewing project but want to be able to wear it too, I would opt for an elastic waist skirt.
You don’t need Amazing sewing skills, you don’t need to worry about having a perfect fit! It’s elastic so it’s super forgiving in that sense. No zips, no buttons, just good old elastic. Choose beginner friendly fabrics too, such as cottons and linens, this will make it easier to sew.

6. Fabric Bookmarks
These are adorable, make great gifts and are quick to make.
You can quilt them, add tassels, personalize them with embroidery, or keep them plain. Thia sewing project can use fabric scraps and left over bits of lace and ribbons too!

7. Reusable Bowl Covers
Sustainable and practical, who doesn’t love a bowl cover.

Use cotton fabric with elastic around the edge. These are actually a great seller at local markets and fairs if that is something you are into. They don’t use much fabric either !
8. Twisted Headband
This one is fun to make, wearable too. Use scrap fabrics or any fabric of your choice. This can be made in maybe 15 minutes or less. The directions can be a little confusing but once you have it down packed, you will find it easy.

Final Thoughts
Sometimes life gets so busy and larger craft and sewing projects just don’t get done, and that’s okay. If you have been feeling pushed for time lately, opt for a smaller one afternoon project like the ones from this list. Finishing a project is super rewarding especially when it can be done in one afternoon.
